Braces are used to realign or straighten teeth by applying pressure to the teeth over a specified length of time. A common form of cosmetic dentistry, braces have been used for generations to address issues such as crowding, spacing, malocclusions such as protrusion, overbite, underbite, open bite, cross bite, and crooked and misaligned teeth.

There are various methods of application for braces, since there are no two mouths alike. Treatment is determined based on the combination of issues presented, and a general time frame can be predicted but never guaranteed, based on the severity and combination of issues needing to be addressed. Braces have the ability to help alter the profile of the face by changing the bone structure in the face to support and provide a more aligned smile.

Braces are comprised of a number of instruments used in combination to apply pressure to the teeth. Most commonly used are orthodontic bands (commonly stainless steel, cemented in the posterior region), arch wires (metal wires) attached to brackets (which are bonded to the teeth with a cementing material), and held in place on each tooth with rubber bands. Spacers or separators may be used to create space between the teeth for orthodontic bands, and other instruments such as coils, rubber bands, and even appliances like head gear may be used in conjunction with braces to realign the teeth and reshape the mouth.

We are gentle, we are professional and we care

Braces can be uncomfortable at first, and there may be discomfort when tightened periodically (usually once a month), however there are plenty of ways to address the discomfort. Eating soft foods and taking a pain reliever usually suffices. The advantages usually far outweigh the discomfort. Dental braces remain a most cost-effective treatment, usually the most time-effective treatment, and are a trusted solution for the restoration of beautifully aligned teeth! If you are concerned about the appearance of metal braces, there are other treatments available. Ceramic braces, lingual braces, and even invisalign are options as well. All of these options can be discussed during your consultation, to ensure you choose the best option for you.
